What is the Moon? Lift-the-Flap Questions & Answers
Usborne lift-the-flap books are great for younger ones – fun, bright illustrations and lots of information delivered in bitesize chunks.

The Moon Book by Gail Gibbons
Simple science focused introduction to the moon with accessible text and clear illustrations and diagrams.

The Moon: Discover the Mysteries of Earth’s Closest Neighbour
Beautifully illustrated and packed with information as well as photos, timelines and diagrams. Covers the formation of the moon, how it effects earth, lunar phases and past and future exploration.

The Usborne Book of the Moon
Would recommend this to go alongside the more science-y books – it includes some wonderful moon folklore and legends as well as moon and space travel information.

What the Moon Is Like Let’s Read-And-Find-Out Science
Full of science based moon facts but very accessible.

Pop-Up Moon
Great interactive book with detailed pop-outs and lots of info – perhaps better for older ones as some of the pop-ups might be a bit delicate.

Counting on Katherine
A short, enjoyable biography of Katherine Johnson who was a ‘computer’ for the Apollo moon landings.

Neil Armstrong
Little People, BIG DREAMS
We really like the Little People, Big Dreams series – each one offers a great introduction to the life of well-known person through colourful illustrations and simple text. They also include some extra facts and a biographical timeline at the back. This one is about Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon!

Midnight on the Moon
Magic Tree House, Book 8
A favourite series, we like these as early reader chapter books or as quick family read alouds. This book is about two children who are transported to the moon via their magic treehouse and have to complete their mission before the oxygen tanks in the space suits run out.

The Night The Moon Went Missing by Brendan Kearney
Love the illustrations in this so much! It’s a sweet story about the importance of the moon but also about valuing ourselves and each other.

Space as You’ve Never Seen it Before
One of our absolute favourite series of books! This one has a space focus and has pages on the near and far sides of the moon, gravity, telescopes, the Apollo missions and more – all in a comic book style with funny bitesize facts and brilliant illustrations.

The Science of Spacecraft: The Cosmic Truth about Rockets, Satellites, and Probes
This ‘Science of Engineering series is great for exploring how things work using diagrams and straight-forward explanations. This book has some information on rockets, lunar modules etc

The Greatest Intergalactic Guide to Space Ever... By the Brainwaves
Fun and full of very detailed illustrations with facts and information in bitesize chunks. Covers lots of aspects of space including ‘Best Mate Moon’!

We enjoyed listening to this audiobook whilst working on the hands-on activities in the Exploring Australia topic guide:

Catch the Moon Game Thames & Kosmos 1-6 Players - Fun for Adults & Kids
Fun game for younger ones to play after reading or watching the gentle story ‘Papa, Please Get The Moon For Me’ by Eric Carle.
